Sounds like a movie. But every piece of it is already being built.

Global data center power jumps 27% this year, to 132 gigawatts. Five tech firms now spend more building this than the whole world spends on oil and gas. And one Virginia man watched his bill leap from about $100 to $281 in a single month.

The hum starts at dawn.

You stop hearing it after a while. Then a cousin visits from somewhere quiet. They ask what that sound is. And you realize you forgot it was there.

That's the Stack.

It sits on the old Henley place, out past the grain co-op. Forty years ago that was sorghum and cattle. Now it's a gray city of sheds. They call it a compute campus. We just call it the Stack.

It drinks five gigawatts. I didn't know what that meant either. My grandson, Eli, explained it. He works there now. He said it's about as much power as three whole cities… running off one patch of dirt.

The power comes from Unit 3.

That's the little reactor they dropped in behind the campus in '38. Barn-sized. Quiet as a held breath. My late husband, Roy, would've hated it on principle. Then he'd have asked for a tour.

I'll be honest. I miss the dark.

You used to see the whole Milky Way out here. Now there's a soft glow on the north horizon, all night, every night. Eli says the campus needs the light. I say I needed the stars. We're both right. That's the trouble with all of it.

But the lights in my kitchen never go out anymore.

Not once since Unit 3 came on. No more summer blackouts. No more candles in the bathroom. For a woman who taught fourth grade in this county for thirty-one years… that's not nothing.

And my bill is capped.

The company that owns the Stack covers the difference. It's in the deal they signed with the county. They pay the extra so we don't. Some months I pay less than folks did back in 2026. In other words… the machine that ate the night sky also pays my light bill.

There's one rule, though.

On the hottest afternoons, the campus goes quiet. They call it a curfew. The Stack throttles down so the town's air keeps running. The first summer, folks fought it. Now it's just how August works. The hum dips. The thinking slows. And we keep cool.

Eli says the company spends more out here than the oil men ever did.

I believe him. The oil men built derricks. These people build a new shed every season. They poured more concrete last year than Calder saw in my whole lifetime.

I don't know if it's good. I don't know if it's bad.

It's just ours now. The hum, the glow, the reactor on the Henley place, the capped bill, the August quiet. My grandson has work he's proud of. I have a sky I can't quite see.

We traded the stars for the lights. Most nights… I think we got the worse end. Some nights I'm not so sure.

The hum is getting louder.

Unit 3 isn't make-believe. Tech firms are buying reactors right now. In January, Meta locked up 6.6 gigawatts of nuclear power.
