In Ballerup, Denmark, the heat is free and the evenings are scheduled around a machine that never sleeps — and Astrid Kjær Holm still isn't sure it's a fair trade.

Ballerup. Six in the morning.

The radiator clicks on before I'm even out of bed.

No gas bill. No oil truck. Just heat, humming up through the pipes from the Nordlys compute hall two kilometers away.

I used to think that was a miracle. Now it's just Tuesday.

Nordlys trains its models day and night. All that heat used to just leak into the sky. Now it leaks into my kitchen instead.

My son Mads works there. Not on the machines that think. On the one that feeds them.

He calls himself a reactor tender. I still call him my boy who couldn't fix a bicycle chain at sixteen.

The reactor is small. The size of a shipping container, he says. It never sleeps. Neither does he, some weeks.

Nordlys had to build that reactor just to connect to our grid at all. New rule, a few years back. Bring your own power, or don't bother.

His paycheck cleared last month for eleven thousand kroner more than mine ever did… teaching maths to bored teenagers for thirty years.

I won't pretend that doesn't sting a little.

Here's what I miss: the quiet. Before Nordlys, Ballerup was just a town. Now there's a hum under everything, even when you can't hear it.

And the brownouts. Every August, for one hour, our block goes dark. The compute hall doesn't. Its contract comes first.

We get a check for it. The Grid Dividend, they call it. Enough to cover a nice dinner… and grumble about it.

In other words, we're paid to go without, so a machine somewhere can keep thinking.

Mads says it's fair. The reactor pays for our heat, our roads, half his salary. I say fair is a strange word for something nobody voted on.

Both things are true, probably.

I remember boiling water on the stove during a real blackout in 2019. That's gone. Truly gone. I don't miss it.

But I miss choosing my own dark.

The heat came free this winter. The quiet did not.

Astrid's free heat isn't fantasy. In Ballerup, Denmark, data center operator atNorth is piping waste heat from its DEN01 facility into the local district network, enough to warm more than 8,000 homes starting in 2028. Meta's data center in Odense has done this since 2019, sending heat to over 12,000 homes a year. The exhaust from an AI server rack is starting to double as a boiler. Denmark and Sweden are targeting 25-35% heat reuse from data centers by 2030.

Mads' reactor job isn't science fiction. Big Tech has committed to more than 10 gigawatts of new nuclear power over the past year to feed its AI habit. Meta alone signed deals worth up to 6.6 gigawatts with three nuclear providers. Microsoft locked in the entire output of the restarted Three Mile Island reactor for 20 years. Google signed its first U.S. fleet deal for small reactors… the shipping-container kind Mads describes. New jobs. New towns. New paychecks.

Astrid's Grid Dividend has real roots. Utilities are already writing checks to keep residents from footing the AI power bill. Pennsylvania's PPL Electric just settled a case that raises household bills 4.9%... but funnels $11 million a year from big data center customers into a low-income assistance fund. Maryland is drafting a law to pay data centers to power down during heat waves, so homes get priority instead. It's a clumsy early version of what Astrid lives with in 2045. We'll see if it holds.

Nordlys building its own reactor just to connect… that rule already exists. Ireland ended a four-year freeze on new data center grid connections in December 2025, but only on strict terms. New large facilities must bring power equal to 100% of what they draw, sited away from strained grid points, and match 80% of yearly demand with renewables built in Ireland. Bring your own power, or don't bother. More than 300 similar bills landed in U.S. statehouses in six weeks this year.

The hum under Ballerup is part of something bigger. Global data center electricity use is on track to top 1,000 terawatt-hours in 2026… more than Japan, a country of 124 million people, uses in a year. AI computation alone needs at least 70 terawatt-hours this year, roughly what Austria burns through. That demand is why reactors, heat pipes, and Grid Dividends exist at all. The machines got hungry first. Everyone else is catching up.
