2045 is a hinge year. It's the 100th birthday of the money system built after World War II. It's also the year some smart people expect machines to pass us. We're the generation stuck in the gap between those two dates.

Picture it. It's 2045. Your power bill is near zero, because a data center next door makes its own electricity. On hot days your lights dim so the machines don't. You ask the air a question… and a room full of servers answers.

Sounds like science fiction. But every piece of it is already being built.

Data centers just drove power prices up tenfold in the biggest U.S. grid. New York became the first state to hit pause on new ones. Amazon signed a 17-year deal to run on a nuclear plant. We are living in the last twenty years of the old world.

So here's how this works. First, a letter from someone living in 2045. Then we snap back to now… and show you the current facts sitting underneath the fiction.

The hum woke me again.

It's four in the morning. The sound is soft. Like a fridge in the next room. But it never stops.

That's the Meridian campus. Forty acres of gray boxes, half a mile past my fence. It thinks all night while I sleep.

I've lived on this road since I was nineteen. First it was corn. Then a solar field. Now it's the campus… and the two small reactors they built to feed it.

They call it behind-the-fence power. The machines make their own now. They don't wait in line for the grid.

I remember when that scared us.

Back in the thirties, the county held a vote. I sat in the third row. Some folks wanted to ban the whole thing. Two counties over already had. There were signs on every lawn.

We said yes. I raised my hand for it.

The deal was simple. They get the land and the water. We get power that almost never fails… and a bill I can barely feel.

Last month my electric bill was four dollars.

My cousin lives one county over. Outside the fence. She pays ninety just to keep her house cool. So I don't complain. Not out loud.

But there are the dim days.

When the heat climbs past a hundred, the campus gets first call on the power. Our lights drop to half. The air conditioner coasts. A soft voice reminds us to wait. "Priority load in effect," it says, real gentle.

The machines never dim. That's the deal too.

My granddaughter asked the house a question yesterday. Just a small one. About a bird outside the window.

The old me would've typed it into a search box. Cost nothing. Now every little question wakes a whole room of chips somewhere. She doesn't know that. To her it's just… air.

Here's the thing I miss. The dark.

The campus glows all night. A pale dome, low on the horizon. My grandkids have never seen the Milky Way from this porch. I have. And I can't hand it back to them.

And yet.

My son fixes the cooling lines out there. Good pay. He stayed in the county. His kids ride bikes on my road in the evening.

The corn's gone. The stars are gone. But the family stayed.

I helped build this. The good part and the loud part both.

Renata's dim days are already on the calendar. On July 2, 2026, PJM — the grid that serves 13 states and D.C. — forecast a peak of 166,304 megawatts. That would top its all-time summer record from 2006. A heat wave near 104°F was bearing down on Maryland and Virginia. To keep the lights on, the U.S. Energy Department cleared PJM to curtail data centers with backup power as a last resort before rolling blackouts. The machines get first call… or they get cut. We'll see which.

Renata's four-dollar bill is fiction. Her cousin's ninety-dollar bill is not. In PJM, the price to guarantee power jumped from $28.92 to $329.17 per megawatt-day — more than tenfold. Data centers drove about 63% of one auction's spike, or $9.3 billion, passed straight to customers. Analysts figure it adds up to roughly $70 a month for the average household by the early 2030s. In Washington, D.C., Pepco bills already rose about $21 a month. Some pay more so the servers can run.

Meridian's on-site reactors trace back to a signed contract. In 2025, Amazon and Talen Energy locked a 17-year deal for 1.92 gigawatts from the Susquehanna nuclear plant in Pennsylvania. That's behind-the-meter power — the machines feeding straight off a plant, skipping the grid line. Gas versions go up fast. A dedicated on-site gas plant can be built in about 18 months, while grid hookups can take years. Renata's "behind the fence" world is being poured in concrete right now.

100+ moratoriums
Renata's county vote isn't invented. Towns are already choosing. By mid-2026, more than 100 local moratoriums were active across the country, with eight towns banning data centers outright. New York became the first state to pass a moratorium of its own. In about six weeks, over 300 data-center bills were filed in more than 30 states. The fight over who hosts the machines — and on what terms — has already started.

U.S. data center construction hit $49.5 billion through April 2026 — nearly four times the year-ago pace. In Northern Virginia, data centers already eat 26% of the state's electricity, and one forecast sees that reaching 60% by 2030. The cloud isn't in the sky. It's in somebody's backyard.
