Picture the year 2045.

Your house decides when to run the dryer. Not you. A small reactor hums on the edge of town, feeding a data hall the size of forty Walmarts. Power is cheap at 3 a.m. and brutal at 6 p.m. And the machines never sleep.

It sounds like science fiction. But every piece of it is already being built.

Data centers could eat up to 12% of America's power by 2030. Electric bills near these sites have jumped as much as 267%. Big Tech signed 10 gigawatts of new nuclear in a single year.

Here's the thing. We are living in the last twenty years of the old world.

2045 is two anniversaries at once. A hundred years since the dollar took the throne in 1945… and the year smart people keep circling for the Singularity. We're the generation stuck in the gap.

So each issue does one thing. A letter from someone living in 2045, then a hard snap back to the present, with the receipts. Fiction first. Facts second. Let's go.

A retired HVAC man in rural Virginia on the reactor that saved his town, the bills that nearly broke it, and a grid that finally learned to talk back.

Subject: The hum you stop hearing

You stop hearing it.

That's the strange part. The reactor sits two miles up Route 22. A little one. They call it a module. It went hot the year my knees gave out, and for about a month the whole county talked about nothing else. Now? It's just the hum under everything. Like a fridge in another room.

My daddy ran the AC business before me. I ran it for thirty years. We fixed condensers and griped about the power company, same as everyone.

Then the data halls came.

First one out on the old Hendricks farm. Then three more. Big windowless boxes, cooled day and night, drinking power like a man dying of thirst. The grid couldn't take it. Our bills tripled inside two summers. People lost houses over a light switch.

The county nearly tore itself apart. Half the town wanted the campus gone. Half wanted the jobs. We had meetings that ended in shouting… and one that ended with the sheriff.

So here's what we settled on.

We let them build. But they had to bring their own power. So they put the module on the ridge, and they signed the town into the deal. Now the campus pays for the reactor, and a slice of every kilowatt comes back to a county trust. My grandkids' school runs on it.

The bills are the wild part.

My house talks to the grid now. It knows when power is cheap. The water heater fills at 3 a.m. The car charges when the wind's blowing. We do laundry after midnight, mostly. Power at 6 p.m. runs four times what it costs at noon… so you learn. You live on the cheap hours.

I miss flipping a switch and not thinking. I do. There was a freedom in dumb appliances. You wanted coffee, you made coffee. Now my coffee maker negotiates.

But I'll tell you what's better. The air's cleaner. The plant up the road doesn't burn a thing. My grandson works at the campus for more than I ever made bending sheet metal. And the lights stay on in August now, which is more than I could say back in '31.

My job these days is the old folks on my road. I set up their houses to ride the cheap hours. Most of them can't work the apps. So I do it for them. They call me the power man. I kind of like it.

The reactor's still humming up there. Two miles up Route 22.

Ray's data halls aren't a stretch. The world's data centers used about 415 terawatt-hours in 2024. The IEA says that more than doubles by 2030… to roughly 945 TWh. That's all of Japan, plugged in. In the US, data centers could swallow somewhere between 6.7% and 12% of the entire power supply by 2030. AI is the engine. It eats electricity the way Ray's halls do.

The tripled bills hit first. Electricity costs near some data centers have jumped as much as 267% over five years. In the PJM grid — 65 million people across 13 states — data centers drove 63% of one auction's price spike, about $9.3 billion pushed onto customers. The 2026–27 capacity price cleared at $329 per megawatt-day, a 22% jump. By 2028, the average family's bill could climb about $70 a month. Ray's neighbors losing houses over a light switch isn't far off.

So the campus brought its own reactor. That part's already happening. Big Tech signed more than 10 gigawatts of new US nuclear in a single year. In January 2026, Meta alone locked up to 6.6 GW with Vistra, TerraPower, Oklo, and Constellation… including a 1.2-GW campus in Pike County, Ohio. Microsoft is paying $16 billion to restart Three Mile Island. The small modular reactor on Ray's ridge is a 2030 promise today. They're building it now.

And the county that nearly tore itself apart? That fight is everywhere right now. More than 75 data center projects worth $130 billion were blocked in just the first three months of 2026. At least 69 local governments have passed bans. 142 activist groups are organizing across 24 states. Senator Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez filed a bill for a national moratorium. The fight in Ray's town is the fight happening in yours.
