Picture the year 2045.

Your power bill shows up… and it's a payment to you. A “grid dividend,” they call it, because you live close enough to the machines. Three counties over, your cousin gets a brownout notice on hot afternoons. A reactor hums where a dairy barn used to stand. And the night sky never goes fully dark.

It sounds like science fiction. But every piece of it is already being poured in concrete.

Right now, the world's data centers are on track to eat about 1,000 terawatt-hours of power in 2026 — roughly what all of Japan uses. Meta just locked up 6.6 gigawatts of nuclear to feed its AI. And in the big grid out East, regular families are staring down an extra $70 a month by 2028… just to keep the machines fed.

Here's the thing. We are living in the last twenty years of the old world.

2045 is the 100th birthday of the money system built after World War II. It's also the year a lot of smart people think machines pass us for good. We're the ones standing in the gap.

So each issue does one thing. First, a letter from someone living in 2045. Then we snap back to now… and show you the receipts.

Subject: The hum I can't unhear

The barn is gone.

They took it down in '41. Where my grandfather milked forty head, there's a gray box the size of a shopping mall now. They call it Helix Campus 7. It thinks. That's the best way I can put it. All day, all night, it just thinks.

I sold them the back forty in 2038. Best and worst thing I ever did.

The money was real. More than the farm cleared in a good decade. I still work the front fields, so I tell myself I'm a farmer. But mostly I'm a man who lives next to a machine that never sleeps.

You want to know what changed everything? Power. Not money. Power.

See, the campus needed its own juice. So they restarted the old reactor down by the river and built three little ones beside it. The Susquehanna stacks never go dark now. From my porch at night, the cooling plume glows soft and white… like a second moon somebody nailed in place.

Here's the strange part. My bill is a credit.

Because I'm inside the host zone, the grid pays me. Last month it was a $340 stabilization dividend. My sister Carol lives in Sullivan County, ninety minutes north. She pays four times what I used to. On the worst July days her lights dim to brown and her AC quits. We don't talk about it much.

The line they drew wasn't on a map. It was around the power.

I miss the dark. I miss the quiet, before the hum. There's always a hum now — low, under everything, like the whole valley is idling. The deer don't come down to the creek anymore. The creek's lower too. The machines drink.

But I won't lie and say it's all loss.

My daughter came back. There's work here now — line techs, cooling crews, water monitors. She bought a house in town. I see the grandkids on Sundays. Ten years ago this county was dying. Now it's the thing everyone fights over.

Up in the No Counties, they voted it all out. No campus, no reactor, no hum. Cheaper land. Darker skies. And the young people leave, the way they used to leave here.

I don't know who's right.

Some nights I sit on the porch and watch that white plume breathe. And I think about my grandfather, and his forty head, and how he'd have no words for any of this.

Then the bill comes. A credit, not a charge.

Dale's Helix campus isn't a stretch. It's an arrival. The IEA expects the world's data centers to pull around 1,000 terawatt-hours in 2026 — about what all of Japan burns in a year. Five single campuses of a gigawatt or more are due to switch on this year, each run by a different tech giant. One gigawatt is a whole big nuclear plant's output… going to one building full of chips. US data center demand alone is forecast near 75.8 gigawatts in 2026.

The reactor next to Dale's farm traces straight to today. In January 2026, Meta signed deals for up to 6.6 gigawatts of nuclear power — with Vistra, TerraPower, Oklo, and Constellation — to feed its AI. One piece is a 1.2-gigawatt campus with Oklo in Pike County, Ohio. Amazon already locked a 1.92-gigawatt deal at the Susquehanna plant in Pennsylvania, and is putting $20 billion into the state. Microsoft is paying to restart Three Mile Island. The chips need power. So the reactors are coming back.

Carol's brown-dimming lights are a forecast, not a fantasy. In the PJM grid that covers 67 million people, the price to guarantee power hit its cap — $333 per megawatt-day in the December 2025 auction. Three years earlier it was under $29. Data centers drove 63% of that jump. The bill lands on regular households: roughly 15% higher in 2026, and an estimated $70 more a month by 2028. Same grid. Very different bills, depending where you stand.

Dale's “No Counties” already exist. In just the first months of 2026, communities blocked more than 75 data center build-outs worth about $130 billion. At least 69 local governments passed bans or moratoriums by May. Near Detroit, Ypsilanti's water authority froze new data center hookups for a year — drinking water and farmland, residents said, weren't worth it. In Pittsburg, California, 300 people packed a council meeting to say no. The fight over power and water is the new zoning fight.
