It hit 116 today.

That's not news here. Not anymore.

We had 128 days over 110 last year. I keep the count on the fridge. Like my mother kept our heights in pencil on the door frame.

I fixed air conditioners for thirty years. Freon first. Then the new stuff. Then the heat pumps. I knew every rooftop unit in this zip code by its rattle.

Back then, cool air was simple. You paid the bill. You flipped the switch. The wall got cold.

Now it's a group thing.

Our block shares power. Fourteen houses, one brain. The batteries in our garages talk to each other all day… trading, saving, waiting. They call it a co-op. My grandkids call it the pool.

At noon the sun is so cheap it's almost free. So the pool drinks it up. By dusk, when everyone gets home and cranks the cold, the batteries breathe out what they saved.

I'm the block steward now. Fancy word. Mostly I walk the alley and check the units. Same as always.

Here's what I miss. Running the AC whenever I wanted. No asking. No app. Just cold air, all mine.

And here's what's better. When the grid buckled in the big July heat, our block never went dark. The reactor two counties over was straining. The city rolled its brownouts. And our fourteen little batteries just… held.

There's a data center out past the old airport. Size of a small town. It glows all night. It eats more power than Phoenix used when I was a boy.

For years I hated it. It felt like it was stealing our summer.

Then last year they piped its waste heat into the district loop. Now it warms water for half the east side. The thing that cooked us is helping run us. Strange world.

My granddaughter asked me if it was scary. The old days, before the pool.

I told her the truth. We weren't scared. We just didn't know how hot it would get.

We know now.

The heat won a long time ago. We stopped fighting it. We started building around it.

And somehow… that's the part that lets me sleep.

Then June 2026 became the hottest June on record for western Europe. Sam's 128 days aren't a guess. They're a trend line, pointed up.

Sam's whole life is cooling. So is the grid's future. In the EU, the power that homes use for cooling nearly doubled from 2018 to 2024. During the June 2026 heat, France alone needed an extra 10 to 14 gigawatts just to run its air conditioners. And the IEA says global cooling demand will grow by 1,600 terawatt-hours by 2035… about what all of Japan burns in a year. The heat makes the demand. The demand strains the grid. Sam felt both.

Sam's data center glows all night and drinks the grid. That part is already here. The IEA expects data center power use to roughly double by 2030… from about 415 terawatt-hours in 2024 to around 945. Meanwhile, more than 2,500 gigawatts of projects sit stuck in line, waiting to plug into grids that can't keep up. Sam's town-sized neighbor isn't fiction. Right now it's a waiting list.

The reactor two counties over keeps Sam's region running. Big tech is placing that same bet right now. To feed their AI, companies have committed to over 10 gigawatts of new nuclear power. Meta alone signed for 6.6. And Microsoft is paying to restart a reactor at Three Mile Island by 2027. The old plants are coming back. New small ones are being drawn up. Sam's reactor starts on a contract signed in 2026.

Sam's fourteen houses share one pool of batteries. That's happening now, block by block. The world installed a record 112 gigawatts of grid batteries in 2025… a 48% jump in a single year, and ten times what we built in 2021. And "virtual power plants" — homes wired together to act as one — reached 38 gigawatts, with home enrollments up 153%. In other words… your thermostat is becoming a power plant. Sam's pool is just the neighborhood version.
